Book Review: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Book Review: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

By Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games debuted in 2008, we were introduced to Katniss Everdeen who volunteered to participate in the 74th annual Hunger Games in place of her sister. From there we continued Katniss's story through Catching Fire and Mockingjay. The main villain of the series was one President Snow, now during the 10th annual Hunger Games we are taken back to see Coriolanus Snow before he became president.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place ten years after the war, the residents of the Capital and districts have no interest in the Hunger Games. During the 10th annual Hunger Games, the Capital leaders in charge of the Hunger Games assign mentors to the district tributes with glory and winnings for the individual who mentors the winner. Coliolanus has been given the chance to be a mentor in the Hunger Games, his one shot to save his family's name and win the glory of mentoring the winning tribute in the 10th annual hunger games. Because of the war, the Snow name has become just a name with no money. But the Snow name must live on, Coliolanus Snow attempts to rebuild the Snow name as well as bring glory to himself.

However, when Coliolanus becomes a mentor he is assigned the lowest of the low tribute, Lucy Gray from District Twelve. The more he learns about her, the more he realizes that she might be a gift. Her skills outside the arena bring an audience that starts to care for the outcome of the Hunger Games.

Throughout the novel Coliolanus brings ideas that are used in the Hunger Games we were introduced to in The Hunger Games. And slowly we start to see how Coliolanus Snow becomes the President Snow that torments Katniss Everdeen.

I would give this novel a ⭐⭐⭐ review. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a great throwback to The Hunger Games trilogy. However, this novel is written like a fan fiction novel. Many chapters answer questions we had while reading The Hunger Games. The ending also seemed to be written quickly, Collins could have expanded on what was happening or what happened to certain character. This novel sets up the possibility that there will be a second novel or a series.

Overall, i would recommend this novel if you enjoy The Hunger Games series! It's a fun throwback if you enjoyed that series to get back into the world of Panem.
