Book Review: The Turn of the Key

The Turn of the Key Book Review

When she stumbles across the ad, she's looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss - a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten - by the luxurious "smart" home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture - perfect family.

What she doesn't know is that she's stepping into a nightmare - one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the unraveling events that led to her incarceration. It wasn't just the constant surveillance from the cameras installed around the house, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn't just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn't even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman, Jack Grant.

It was everything.

She knows she's made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behaviour toward the children wasn't always ideal. She's not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she's not guilty - at least not of murder. Which means someone else is.

As I've said in my other reviews of Ruth Ware's novel i love her writing and love most of her novels. I have previously reviewed all four of her other novels before her newest one The Turn of the Key came out in Canada.

The Turn of the Key was overall a great novel! Ware has a way to describe the details of an environment and setting up a plot that some authors can't achieve. I love her writing and how she is able to tell the story.

The character of Rowan i think was my favourite character Ware has written yet. She is likable and even with her mistakes you understand why she did them. Her behaviour towards the children is one that many individuals feel with children who try to push buttons but overall she keeps herself in check. I feel she is someone i can personally relate to.

The other characters didn't mean too much to the story except for the children and you just really want to love them. You want to pick them up and give them a hug because you know they've seen and been through a lot.

I read this novel in two days and truthfully i think i could have finished it sooner if i was allowed to just sit around for a day to read. I very much enjoyed it.

The only downside was the ending, i feel like it happened so fast and wasn't surprising. I didn't like the add in for why the other nannies have left - it was kinda pointless to the story. And the child's death and the reason behind it really wasn't surprising at all.

I will give this novel ⭐⭐⭐⭐ review. Really great story and all i wanted to do was read this novel but the ending was nothing surprising and happened so fast. Overall, another great novel from Ruth Ware!
